Piracy as a Service
I remember times when I was downloading a full discography of my favourite artists a day. I was poor, streaming was not really a thing for another couple of years and the stuff was out there available. The Pirate Bay was still around (or one of its proxies, at times possibly even run by the FBI).
Now we have streaming, the piracy is still here, but it is now a niche rather than mainstream thing. Well, at least we thought till the rise of LLMs. Now, the whole internet, scraped without any permission, is out there and being sold back to corporations and regular people for increasingly large sums of money. Taking the mainstream by the storm at such a scale, it does not seem to bother anyone, regulators are nowhere to be found, some are even supporting building data centres to support the infrastructure for this out-in-the-open piracy.
This is Piracy-as-a-Service. It is possible because of the scale and the fact that the world was taken by a surprise when LLMs appeared. There is probably no turning back since we are severely lacking any type of regulations or regulatory body. If this is allowed, I do not see any reason why the original piracy should present any moral or ethical dilemma.
